About Thompson Seniors
Community Resource Council Inc

We partner with several organizations to help Seniors and Elders with food security, social activities, indoor and outdoor recreational activities, and advocating for health, housing, and transportation services required by elderly people.

Our Story

How We Started

Thompson Seniors Community Resource Council was incorporated in 1996 as a Charitable Organization to recognize the growing number of people aged 65 and older in the city of Thompson. From the outset, much of the programming focused on their social needs and included events like congregate meals, potlucks, barbeques, craft workshops, penny bingo, and an annual bus trip to a major center or another province.
An exercise program was also initiated by the Northern Regional Health Authority (then known as the Burntwood Regional Health Authority), which was a major player and funder of the TSCRC from its formation. The NRHA continues to provide funding to offset the cost of salaries and program expenses, but the corporation continues to fundraise and seek grants to maintain a level of service.

What we do

We work to achieve our mission through social contact, programming and advocacy.

Weekly Seniors Drop-Ins and congregate meals provide regular social interaction. We also have an annual bus trip to Paint Lake for an afternoon outing.

We also program events such as cribbage tournaments, workshops, and community events (Bring Your Bloomers and cookie decorating contest) to keep Seniors and Elders active in the community.

We help provide food security and intergenerational activity through our garden box project and ‘bike’ program.

We communicate monthly through a newsletter mailed or emailed to the homes of seniors. And we maintain Facebook and web sites.

We advocate regularly for the prevention of elder abuse with emphasis on an annual World Elder Awareness Day conference. We also advocate for health care needs specific to seniors such as preventative medical foot care services.

We help the community by running the Child Find booth at the Nickel Days celebrations and supporting other community initiatives.

And through our fund raising, we often bring entertainment to residents of Thompson and surrounding area.

Thank you to our hamper supporters.

Thank you to the R.D. Parker Collegiate students for their May donation to our hamper / food security program. During the past year, students from most of the elementary schools in the city have also donated to our program. We are grateful to them all.

Food Security for Seniors / Elders on low incomes

Many Seniors and Elders in Thompson are living at or below the poverty line. They often have mobility challenges and sometimes language barriers. Through our food security program we provide weekly food hampers to Seniors and Elders who need their food stores supplemented.

We try to follow the Canada Food Guide to ensure there is fresh dairy, fruit, vegetables and meats, in addition to soups, crackers, pasta, rice and other staples. Food sources come from those we purchase, as well as in-kind donations.

We are grateful to the many volunteers (mostly Seniors and Elders) who deliver the hampers faithfully every week.

We have been able to continue this program for three years with the help of corporate donations and local charities who have contributed financially; and also to the generosity of the local citizens who often hold food drives. The students at almost all of the schools have donated literally tons of canned and boxed foods.

Local organizations and businesses (such as the Kin Club) have donated foods and cash. Employee groups from local businesses have also pooled their resources to help keep this program going. And a local food bank has also contributed fresh foods.

Among the contributors: New Horizons, Manitoba Blue Cross, Petro-Canada, AI Financial, Ridgestone Financial, Sysco, Second Harvest, Manitoba Food Community and Cultural Collaborative, Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimanak food bank, Futures, Ma-Mow-We-Tak Friendship Centre, Kin Club, USW Humanitarian Fund, students from R.D. Parker Collegiate, Juniper School, Westwood School, and Deerwood School, employees from Thompson Regional Airport Authority, Thompson Ford and many others. We only hope that if we have left anyone out, we will be notified and can add them to this list in future.
